Education/Schooling More Restraints

November 24, 2010

We have all been in a classroom environment in which we had to read a certain book.  The entire class was assigned a book and everyone had to write, review and discuss about the same book.  In high school we were smart and used cliff notes because the book we were reading had no relevance or provided any interest to us so we figured out a way to beat the system.  In college we would share notes or ask someone else what happened in chapters one through eight so we didn’t have to read it because frankly we didn’t want to waste the time reading it ourselves.  Once again, absolutely no interest.

Why are we forced to read a certain book.  An artist doesn’t want to read about history, an architect doesn’t want to read about philosophy, a historian doesn’t care about marketing and a doctor doesn’t want to read about world war 2.

The point is why are we being constrained to reading what people are telling us to read in our classes.  Why can’t each individual have the freedom to read and study what they have an interest in.  Keep the assignments, project and book reports open ended to be done on what the interest of the individual is.  Can you imagine the quality of work from people who actually are doing and researching something they want to be researching.  Everyone wins.  The Student gets to learn more about their passion and have fun doing it and the teacher gets a final outcome of brilliance, effort and care within assignments.

Let individuals be and do as they want.  Don’t constrain them in an educational environment.
